Ingredients

For the Marinade
  • 5 tablespoons Soy sauce Substitute with tamari for a gluten-free option.
  • 3 tablespoons Hoisin sauce Can be replaced with a DIY mix of soy sauce and sugar if unavailable.
  • 2 tablespoons Rice vinegar Apple cider vinegar works well as a substitute.
  • 2 tablespoons Honey Maple syrup is a great vegan alternative.
  • 1 teaspoon Five-spice powder Try a mix of cinnamon, star anise, and cloves if you’re out of this.
  • 3 cloves Garlic Fresh is preferred, but powdered garlic can suffice in a pinch.
  • 1 tablespoon Ginger Fresh is best, though powdered ginger works as an alternative.
For the Chicken
  • 2 pounds Chicken thighs Opt for bone-in, skin-on thighs for the juiciest results.

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Baking Sheet
  • Oven

Method

Step‑by‑Step Instructions for Char Siu Chicken
  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, honey, five-spice powder, minced garlic, and grated ginger until well combined.
  2. Coat the chicken thighs thoroughly in the marinade, cover and let it marinate in the fridge for at least 30 minutes or up to 24 hours.
  3. Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C) and prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper.
  4. Lay the marinated chicken thighs skin-side up on the prepared baking sheet, ensuring they are spaced apart.
  5. Place the baking sheet in the oven and roast for 45-55 minutes, basting with the remaining marinade every 15 minutes.
  6. Check the internal temperature of the chicken after 45 minutes; it should reach 165°F (75°C).
  7. Remove from the oven and let it rest for about 5 minutes, then garnish with chopped green onions and a sprinkle of sesame seeds.
