Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Thinly slice the onions. Heat olive oil in a skillet and sauté the onions for 30-40 minutes until golden brown.
  2. Add butter to the skillet and whisk in flour to form a roux. Gradually pour in the cream until thickened, then stir in caramelized onions and seasonings.
  3. Boil salted water and cook the cavatappi macaroni until al dente. Drain and mix with béchamel sauce.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Transfer the mixture to a baking dish, add remaining onions and breadcrumbs on top.
  5. Bake for 10-15 minutes until breadcrumbs are golden and crispy.
